After several years working as an insurance agent, you might be looking for new opportunities. Teaching insurance to students who are looking to enter the industry or other agents who want to brush up on their job skills can provide you with a second income and lots of job satisfaction. But how do you know if this new role is right for you?
The Benefits of Being a Teacher
There are many benefits to becoming a teacher. If you have a passion for insurance, you can share your skills with others and inspire your students. You can fit in teaching around your job as an insurance agent and make a real difference.
Research shows that teachers have high levels of job satisfaction. According to one study, 83 percent of teachers “loved their job.”
“You have a high degree of autonomy as a teacher. You are the boss of your classroom. You decide how the classroom is set up and what the rules will be. You have a set curriculum, but you can vary the way you teach it,” says the Houston Chronicle.
The Skills You Need
Not everyone can teach insurance. You will need to be a motivated, enthusiastic individual who can explain complex insurance topics in a simple way in order to improve student engagement.
You will also need to possess soft skills like communication and listening. If you work as an insurance agent, you probably already know how to communicate with customers and listen to their concerns. However, you will need to use these skills in a classroom environment.
What You Will Teach
Here are some of the topics you will teach your students:
- Insurance legislation: This includes federal and state legislation that governs the insurance sector.
- Financial products: This includes the various insurance products on the market and how they benefit consumers and corporations.
- Insurance regulations: This includes how insurance agents and brokers sell financial products to customers and clients and how governmental and non-governmental regulations impact the industry.
- Insurance best practices: This includes procedures like completing deals, working with clients and sourcing the best insurance products.
How to Become a Teacher
You don’t necessarily need a college degree to teach insurance. Sometimes, your experience as an insurance agent is more than enough. However, you might need to enroll in a continuing education course so you can learn the latest legislation, regulations, and developments in the insurance sector. This will ensure you are teaching your students the most accurate up-to-date information.
If you have the right soft skills and a passion for insurance, you should consider a career in teaching. You won’t have to do it full time — you can teach students about insurance on your own terms, at a time that suits you.
